THE SKI MAKER

My name is Jamie Kunka and I have been making custom skis in Birnam for the last 10 years.

10 years ago when studying product design at DJCAD in Dundee I became fascinated with the traditional craft element of ski making. I wanted to bring back the feel and romance of wooden skis into the modern world of back country skiing. My goal is to build skis that are high performance, sustainable and beautiful. I do this through a blend of tradition materials like wood composites and modern materials like carbon fibre composites. I'm fascinated by wood and what it can do mechanically in a ski. It's such a great material which gives a ski life and elasticity and I want to show case it as much as possible in my skis. Naturally this path led me down the custom ski route and for the last 10 years I have been bringing customer's dream skis to life. It's an honour to have had so many varied commissions over the years and as a result I can offer anything from nordic skis to powder skis and anything in between.
